Peter Todd admits being Satoshi Nakamoto in new HBO documentary
In the HBO documentary Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery, producer Cullen Hoback attempts to uncover the mystery of Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonymous creator of Bitcoin. Hoback presents "evidence" pointing to Peter Todd, a Canadian Bitcoin core developer, as the inventor of the most famous cryptocurrency.
The final scene of the film shows Todd responding to Hoback's provocative question with the phrase, "Well, yes, I am Satoshi Nakamoto." However, such an admission should be taken with caution — Todd himself has repeatedly used this phrase as a way to protect the real creator of Bitcoin, emphasizing the right to anonymity.
Before the film's release, Todd openly denied his involvement in Bitcoin’s creation and expressed skepticism about Hoback's conclusions, especially after clips from the documentary leaked online, sparking a wave of speculation.
Even after the official release of the documentary on October 8, Todd again refuted his "confession" on social media, stating, "I am not Satoshi." He has joked about this topic multiple times, such as in the What Bitcoin Did podcast in 2019, where he said, "I am Satoshi, just like everyone else."
While Hoback tries to present his "evidence" as the key to solving the mystery, most of it is based on Todd's past statements, which seem more like irony than truth. For example, in a chat message, Todd sarcastically claimed to be the "best expert in donating his bitcoins." Hoback interprets this as an admission that Todd might have lost access to 1.1 million bitcoins believed to be Nakamoto's holdings.
The HBO documentary raises more questions than it answers. Is Peter Todd really hiding his involvement, or is it just a game to keep the intrigue alive?
