Hackers compromised X-accounts of crypto projects to promote fake tokens

Recently, hackers took control of the Litecoin page on X with 1.1 million followers, using it to advertise a fake meme token. The project team quickly regained access and apologized, clarifying that the fraudulent posts were live for only a few seconds.
However, Litecoin was not the only victim: the account of the Foresight Ventures fund with 28,000 followers was used to announce fake tokens, and the account of LayerZero Labs CTO Ryan Zarik was used for a fake airdrop. The Holoworld AI project with 150,000 followers also suffered.
Despite the quick actions of the teams, some users, judging by the comments, had already fallen victim to the scam. The exact amount of damage has not yet been.
According to PeckShield, in 2024, losses in the crypto industry from the actions of criminals amounted to $3.01 billion. It is worth noting that earlier on-chain analyst ZachXBT reported on a hacker who earned $500,000 using X-accounts to promote fraudulent crypto schemes.
Cyberattacks are becoming increasingly sophisticated, and account protection has become a top priority for both projects and their users. To minimize risks, it is important to use two-factor authentication (2FA) and regularly change passwords, avoiding the use of the same password for different platforms. In addition, it is crucial to carefully check information about tokens and airdrops to avoid falling victim to scammers.
